Exploring Quality of Life Through a New Library in Accra
During a recent trip to Accra, a new library was discovered that became the perfect opportunity for a field trip for our students. This modern library, full of resources and potential, offered a stark contrast to the communities many of the students come from, making it an ideal place to explore the concept of "Quality of Life."
Teaching Quality of Life
For many of these students, living in poverty is the only reality they've known. Despite their challenging circumstances, they often express contentment and happiness. They don’t aspire to the material luxuries that dominate media and advertising, and many are more focused on basic needs than the consumer-driven dreams others might have.
The goal of this field trip was to help them understand the gap between their everyday lives and communities that invest in resources like libraries, sports centers, and other public amenities. Over time, the hope is that students will begin to see the potential for something better and be inspired to reach for it.
Learning and Discovery
At the library, the students were captivated by a room full of computers, taking typing classes and playing educational games. The nursery area, bright and colorful with an abundance of books, provided an engaging space for younger children. Teachers read to them, followed by interactive discussions that helped build comprehension.
A Message of Hope
While the significance of the library might not have been fully understood by all, it was a powerful symbol of what could be possible with community investment. The hope is that, through experiences like this, students will begin to envision a future beyond their current circumstances and understand that better opportunities are within reach.
