Sarah has many talents and skills relative to our project. We met through Rotary here in Ghana and I know Sarah will bring all her knowledge and understanding to make a difference here.

Help Sarah raise the funds we need to remove this toxic waste. More importantly, to make history in Ghana.

In this world, people suffer without the belief they can make a difference in their own communities. With our volunteers and support from friends like Sarah and Mohammed, we will make history that will create a path for future projects.

Sarah’s Relevant Project and Work Experience
Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholar (August 2011-July 2013)
I was funded by Rotary International to work with a Rotary Club in Accra, Ghana while beginning a Master’s Degree at the University of Ghana. During the 2011-2012 academic year, I made presentations about American culture and environmental sustainability while assisting in Rotary service projects. Since then, I have been presenting to Rotary Clubs about environmental problems in West Africa and the role of community engagement to audiences throughout Wisconsin.

The Role of Socio-Economic Status on Risk Perception of Air Pollution and Health in Accra, Ghana (MPhil Thesis, August 2011-July 2013)
I designed a questionnaire that was distributed to residents of four neighborhoods of varying location and socio-economic status in Accra, Ghana. The questionnaire explored the roles of education level, income and assets, exposure to air pollution, and current health status on how residents perceive the risk of air pollution to themselves and their families. Key informants in the EPA and Ministry of Health were interviewed on the roles of policy and public perception in controlling air pollution.

We can hear people begin to sing “Joy2theWorld” as they walk by our signage…everyone is in a festive mood!

We begin 2013 full speed ahead…Joy2theWorld is anticipating a second container shipment of books for rural schools and libraries… the container is in the Port of Tema now and we will pick it up January 2. This is a huge project and partnership with Rotary-Books for the World Program, Rotary-Accra West and Joy2theWorld. Thanks to the generosity of Rotary over 20,000 books arrived last February…providing school books for over 75 local schools. Now a container with approximately 40,000 books will impact the community here in Accra.

Special thanks to all the volunteers in Houston, TX (coordinated by “Books for the World” Rotarian and CEO, Charlie Clemmons).

Both Rotarys (Houston and Accra-West) are footing the costs of shipping…Joy2theWorld supplies the manpower to unload, organize and distribute the books to the schools. This is a massive project with over 25 local volunteers (coordinated by staff member Mohammed Sulemana) as they will unload the books, separate them by Primary, Junior High and Senior High, or general for libraries). Each section will then be separated by category… Math, Science, English, etc.

Lots of work! But we have been preparing for this and on Wednesday, we can jump into action!

We will keep you updated… and oh, yes….Afehyia Pa!

Rotary International’s “End Polio Now” Campaign in Ghana

Last Saturday Syambra and I participated in Rotary International’s “End Polio Now” Campaign in Ghana. Normally, as a Rotarian I would donate at my local Rotary (District 5890 in Houston) but now I belong to District 9100 in Accra. We actually get to participate in the immunizations! Two drops on the child’s tongue is all it takes…plus a little black ink on their fingernail to mark the vaccination.
We actually went to some of the villages where our women clients live but we also went way back into the smaller, more remote villages as well. Overall, the goal was over 50,000 vaccines over a 3 day period.
